Let US restore GSP for Bangladesh
Sunday, 27 April 2014
We agree with views of the Bangladesh's Ambassador to the US that suspension of GSP by the US is not helping Bangladeshi workers in the readymade garments (RMG) sector. The US should help us improve the existing working conditions in RMG sector which can play a vital role to banish poverty and illiteracy.
Bangladesh can easily supply apparels to the world at lower prices if we get support from global brands and retailers in making RMG factories compliant. About four million people are directly involved in the RMG sector and most of them are women. It is obviously helping our country to move ahead. It is now a US$ 20 billion industry and is getting bigger gradually. The word 'Bangladesh' has become a brand in the world and we need to take it much further. If the US provides GSP facility to Bangladesh, the workers of RMG sector will also be benefitted. We understand that countries, including the US, are not happy with Bangladesh as its recent general election has been flawed. But we are sure a free and fair election can be arranged soon but in the meantime the US should reinstate its GSP facility to Bangladesh and help us to improve the working condition and safety of the workers.
