The government relaxed the curfew hour for the second time after it was enforced from 8:0pm on Wednesday last following a series of violent activities, triggered by Monday's incidents at the Dhaka University campus.
Earlier, the curfew was first lifted for three hours from 4:0pm to 7:0pm on Thursday.
Immediately after the announcement about relaxation of the curfew hour, many city dwellers were seen rushing to kitchen markets for buying essentials.
As usual, people attended Juma prayers at mosques in the capital.
Besides, most of the city shopping centres also witnessed rush of customers on Friday after a lull, market sources said.
Most of the shopping malls, kitchen markets and grocery shops in the capital remained open on Friday.
But banks, financial institutions, offices of most government, semi-government and autonomous bodies, private companies, trading on the stock markets and other big business establishments remained closed on Friday because of weekly holiday.
The government declared all government, semi-government and autonomous offices closed on Thursday while banks financial institutions, educational institutions and business establishments and major shopping centres also remained closed in the capital city.
The movement of rickshaws, CNG-run auto rickshaws, passengers' buses and private cars was almost normal in the city streets until 10pm on Friday.
People, especially who remained stranded because of the curfew, took the opportunity of such extended curfew break to leave for their respective destinations.
As a result, the intercity bus terminals at Gabtali, Mahakhali, Sayedabad and other places of the city witnessed big crowds of homebound passengers, especially the students.
On Wednesday, the government declared all universities across the country and colleges in divisional towns closed for an indefinite period.
Besides, students were asked to vacate residential dormitories by 8:00pm Wednesday.
But, a large number of the students from the dormitories of Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Eden Women's Collage, Dhaka Collage, Titumir Collage and other educational institutions remained stranded in the city due to imposition of curfew at 8:0 pm on the day.
