Lift emergency, ban on indoor politics now, demands Zillur

Friday, 9 November 2007

Acting Awami League (AL) President Zillur Rahman Thursday demanded to the Caretaker Government (CG) to lift the ban on indoor politics across the country and withdraw the state of emergency now, as he said, presently peace prevails on the political front, reports UNB.
"The government should withdraw the state of emergency now, as there is no situation prevailing in the country that requires a state of emergency," he said at a joining ceremony at his Gulshan residence.
Former deputy secretary Shamsul Huq joined Awami League by presenting bouquet to the party's acting president.
"We can't take preparation for participating in the next general election, as indoor politics is now restricted," Zillur said, and requested the government to free indoor politics completely from the ban.
He said, Awami League may join the city corporation elections, but the party's central working committee will take the decision in this regard.
About the joining of Shamsul Huq, the AL leader said, his coming proved that the party is moving on the right track. "To go to state power is not our main motto…our main desire is to serve the people and never did we do anything against people's interest."
About Col (retd) Rashid's claim about Col (retd) Taher's link with the Bangabandhu assassination, Zillur termed the interview of the condemned fugitive as "strange."
He demanded immediate release of the party chief Sheikh Hasina and general secretary Abdul Jalil as well as other leaders and workers, detained during the crackdown on politicians under the state of emergency.
