Lighter ship sinks in Bay

CHATTOGRAM, May 19: A lighter ship named MV Tamim sank in the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday.
MV Tamim loaded with 1,600 tones of wheat worth around Tk 66.4 million sank in Tillarchar area of Ramgoti at around 4pm.
The ship was going to Dhaka from the outer anchorage of Chattogram seaport to unload the 1,600 tonnes of wheat for Nabil Auto Flour Mills Limited.
Nobi Alom, vice president of the Lighterage Workers Union, said, "All the crew members of the ship could manage to save themselves by the help of other ships and boats."
Sources said MT Tamim was carrying 1,600 tonnes wheat from MV Profel Grace at the outer anchorage of the seaport.
The vessel hit something underwater developing a leak in its bottom in nearby Tillarchar area of Ramgoti and sank there abruptly.
Somota Shipping that operates the vessel is trying to salvage it.
