Thursday, 26 July 2007

CHITTAGONG, July 25: A lighterage ship, carrying some 5,000 tonnes of cement and clinkers, sank in the Sandwip channel of the Bay during bad weather Wednesday morning. Port sources said the ship, 'MV Thiram', heading for Banglabazar in Dhaka capsized in the Bay with 14 crew members at about 5.30am. Ten of the crew members were rescued in the morning and the rest at noon by other ships. Meanwhile, the port authority asked all river vessels to cross the channel carefully as it has become riskier due to the prevailing bad weather. — UNB
