Limiting children's tech use
Monday, 10 July 2023
According to latest research, on an average, 8.0- to 10-year-olds across the world spend almost eight hours a day with various forms of gadgets, while older children and teenagers spend around 11 hours a day with electronic media, surpassing the time they spend in school. This research indicates that a majority of adolescents are using technology unwisely, leading to falling grades. As a result, children may behave abnormally and react negatively if they are stopped from accessing online materials. So, it is important the parents and teachers monitor properly children's internet use.
Technology has both advantages and drawbacks. Its benefits can only be realised when it is used wisely, otherwise, its consequences can be detrimental as the saying goes, "excess of everything is bad". Some parents may look to be happy that their children have become tech-savvy. But only a few of them are concerned about negative effects of excessive use of gadgets and online platforms on children. Complete elimination of technology from our lives is impossible, but its severity can be mitigated by implementing the following suggestions. Firstly, limiting the amount of time children spend on technology and restricting access to certain apps. Educating children about the pros and cons of technology and clearly informing them that unwise use of technology can negatively impact their future career is also important.
