A listed criminal was allegedly tortured to death in police custody in the city Friday. The deceased was identified as Monir Hossain (25), son of Mozammel Hoque of Shantibagh under Motijheel Thana. The police said people of Gulbagh area caught Monir and handed him over to them after mass beating Friday morning. Earlier, the police failed to arrest Monir after one Rahima Begum of the area had come under Monir's attack Thursday night. Motijheel police took injured Monir to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at about 7:00am. After giving first aid, the DMCH authorities returned Monir to police custody. Later, at about 12:15pm, the police again took him to the DMCH where attending doctors declared him dead soon after his arrival. Monir, a close aide of top listed terror 'Golakata' Rubel, was wanted in some criminal cases, including extortion, said a police officer. Monir's family members alleged that heavy police beating in custody caused his death as he looked well after receiving the first aid.— UNB
