Literacy rate now 70pc

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid told Parliament Tuesday that the country's literacy rate was now 70 per cent. "According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, the literacy rate now stands at 70 per cent in the country," he said, replying to a scripted question. The minister said the government was undertaking and implementing different projects to enhance the literacy rate. In reply to a starred question, the minister said as many as 1680 posts of assistant teacher remained vacant in 324 government secondary schools across the country. — UNB
