Liton for reinstatement of cocoon farmers

Thursday, 19 November 2009

RAJSHAHI, Nov 18 (BSS): Mayor of Rajshahi AHM Khairuzzaman Liton said Wednesday that there was no alternative to bringing back the cocoon farmers to their ancestral profession to protect the traditional silk sector from degradation.
In this regard, he called for launching a simple interest- rate loan for the sericulture farmers to encourage them to this field and the government level patronisation is very much essential in this regard.
Mayor Liton was addressing a human chain programme staged by the local unit of Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) in front of City Bhaban demanding protection of the silk sector. He also expressed his solidarity with them.
The mayor also said that he held meetings with the finance and textile ministries on resumption of the now defunct Rajshahi Sericulture Factory and a continuous effort is underway to this end.
Around 800 people would get jobs and a new dimension will be created in the silk sector if the factory becomes operational again and that will be a model for other private silk factories, he added.
He said that around 1500 tonnes of silk yarn was produced in only the adjacent Maldah district of India.
Similarly, he also said only Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj are capable of producing the same amount of yarn if the sector gets necessary help from the government.
