LMPs can reduce maternal, neonatal deaths: Speakers

RANGPUR, July 13 (BSS): Speakers at an orientation course today asked the local medical practitioners (LMPs) for ensuring nutrition of the pregnant women, mothers and babies to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths in rural areas.
World Vision Bangladesh (WVB) under its Fulbari Area Development Programme (ADP) organised the orientation on 'Integrated Management of Childhood Illness' for 20 trained LMPs at Betdighi union parishad hall room under Fulbari upazila in Dinajpur.
Fulbari Upazila Heath and Family Planning Officer Dr Fazlur Rahman attended the orientation as the chief guest with Programme Officer of Fulbari ADP of the NGO Badal Sangma in the chair.
Medical Officer of Bezai Health Sub-centre under Eluari union in the upazila Dr Shahed Murshed, Health Programme Organiser of Fulbari ADP of WVB Shahanur Akhter and its Programme Officer Lal Thoai Bom also addressed.
The speakers said the LMPs could play vital role in reaching primary health services to the pregnant women, babies, children and lactating mothers in the rural areas to reduce maternal, neonatal and child deaths.
They asked the LMPs for contributing in properly implementing the government's five-year term programme to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths to the minimum by 2016 through ensuring maternal and neonatal health services.
They discussed about sources of nutrition, importance of optimum nutrition, dangers during pregnancy, reasons behind maternal and neonatal deaths, harms of child marriage, importance of first milk for newborn babies and other related issues.
