Load shedding grips Ctg

CHITTAGONG, Nov 25: Chittagong people are reeling under load shedding upto 150 to 200 megawatts (MW) daily despite constant efforts by Power Development Board (PDB) to overcome the shortage.
Normal civic life and greater industrial production in this region are at stake because of inadequate power supply.
PDB sources said, power supply system of the region had practically become dependent on national grid as the Chittagong based power centres were not in a position to generate power fully because of inadequate gas supply.
Under the acute gas shortage power generation at Shikalbaha Power Centre (SPC) has been stopped within only six months of commissioning. SPC generated power ranging from 20 to 30 MWs on an average daily.
Low gas pressure compelled one unit of Raujan Thermal Power Centre to generate only 100 MW of power Sunday while 3 units of Kaptai Hydro Power Plant was able to generate 125 MW.
As against total requirement of 550 MWs of power in Chittagong, local power centres are capable of generating power up to 220 to 230 MW.
So, despite procuring electricity from the national grid for meeting the deficit, extent of load shedding is increasing day by day.
