Loan defaulters, tax evaders and persons convicted of crimes, corruption and moral turpitude will not be eligible to participate in the country's apex trade body election to be held August 16 next.
Members of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Thursday unanimously took the decision at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) following a plea from the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) on the change of rules for participation in the FBCCI election.
The EGM was held at the FBCCI conference room, which was attended by several hundred members from across the country.
It will be incorporated in the FBCCI's memorandum and article of association.
The members also sought introduction of direct election for every posts of the country's apex chamber body to ensure democracy and transparency.
The government issued a gazette notification in 2002 barring the direct election and it reserved the authority to nominate 14 directors from chamber and association groups.
The FBCCI also agreed with the proposal placed by the general members to reform the FBCCI relating to election system.
The FBCCI is comprised of one president, one first vice president and one vice president with 38-member board of directors.
FBCCI president Mir Nasir Hossain told the reporters that it would incorporate suggestions from the members on the reform.
FBCCI first vice president Mohammed Ali, vice president Dewan Sultan Ahmed and directors were present at the EGM.
