The local garment buyers urged the government to withdraw customs duty on garment samples sent by the foreign buyers to Bangladesh.
In a press release, president of the Bangladesh Garment Buying House Association (BGBA) Qayum Reza Chowdhury said there is no resale value of those sample items in the local markets.
"But the officials in the Zia International Airport (ZIA) fix 100 per cent duty on those sample items which hampers the business," he said.
He said the members of the association have recently met the member of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) Rashidul Ahsan Chowdhury to discuss the problem and received assurance on the issue to be resolved, the release said.
Talking to the FE, deputy secretary of the association Selim Jahangir said the government should maintain a record book or a passbook for every local buying house to monitor receipt of tax-free samples from the foreign buyers.
