Local govt election a must to ensure people's democratic rights: Adviser Zillur

Saturday, 21 June 2008

CHITTAGONG, June 20 (UNB): Commerce and Education Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman said Friday local government election is a must whenever and wherever necessary in the country to ensure people's democratic rights.

"It's a responsibility and routine work of government and Election Commission to hold local government elections for ensuring people's democratic rights. I hope, political parties will understand this," he said briefing newsmen after a divisional level pre-dialogue with the representatives of civil society at the local Circuit House auditorium.

The adviser stated that the work of completing legal process for releasing former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and her two sons was going on as the government had taken the matter with positive attitude for the interest of the nation.

The government, he said, is considering both legal process and the humanitarian aspect in the matter of releasing Khaleda Zia and her two sons.

Dr Zillur Rahman urged all political parties to come forward with an understanding attitude, not considering the government as their opponent.

Communications Adviser Ghulam Quader, who also took part in the pre-dialogue, said it is being discussed at the dialogue whether it would be possible to form an "alliance government" in the future by ensuring participation of two major political parties through understanding.

But Adviser Hossain Zillur instantly said the government has no agenda to discuss the formation of an alliance government at the dialogue. Such a concept came from the participants of the ongoing dialogues.

He also informed the journalists that Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed would participate in the regional dialogue at the divisional level to be held on June 28 at the Engineers' Institution auditorium here.

Already invitation cards have been sent to some 300 representatives from civil society to ensure participation in the dialogue, the adviser said.

Acting Mayor of Chittagong City corporation Manzurul Alam, Senior Vice President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) MA Latif, District Bar Association President AKM Sirajul Islam and Chittagong Development Authority Chairman Shah Akhtar Uddin, among others, participated in the two and a half hour programme.
