Some local knitwear manufacturers are now producing both high quality non-cotton fabrics and knitwear with the same to make an inroad in the developed markets.
Currently, at least, five local knit manufacturers are developing the non-cotton fabrics using yarns of coolmax, micro polyester, coolmax silver, lycra, X-static, phermolite, suplex, tectel and other categories of advanced non-cotton imported raw materials.
The knitwears produced of such fabrics, occupy nearly 35 per cent of the global knit product market of US$ 1.0 trillion. The fabrics are generally used to manufacture different types of sportswear.
The international price of such sportswear is around six to seven times more than that of the normal knitwears, said industry insiders.
The knitwears made of high-quality non-cotton fabrics help absorb sweating and have anti-bacterial properties.
Diabetic and blood pressure patients put on such wears as those keep them comfortable and fresh.
Currently, the five manufacturers are making shipment of 10 million pieces of such knitwears each year.
While talking to the FE, Managing Director of Grameen Knitwear Limited Md Ashraful Hassan said the demand for garment such fabrics is high in the world.
"We are only a few producing it. We want more entrepreneurs in the field to broaden our image in the world," the managing director added.
Manufacturers of high quality knitwears claimed that local manufacturers had advanced well to produce finer fabrics, attractive printing and finishing to serve global buyers of active and functional wears.
He also said that Bangladesh could add at least another 25 per cent value to knit export once a good number of entrepreneurs produce such products in the country.
Apart from manufacturing garments of non-cotton fabrics, the Grameen has already exported only fabrics - Coolamx Fresh Apex -- to China worth US$ 35000.
Sources at the company also said they have already got another big order from China worth $ 50,000.
Girish Mani, General Manager of Landmark Group told the FE that they had a plant at Ashulia for producing 18000 tonnes of high tech non-cotton fabrics a day.
He said the company is planning to export only such fabrics to China, Vietnam and other potential countries.
"We hope that we will be able to export such fabrics from 2008 next," he said, adding, that Bangladesh has huge potentials for enhancing production of such fabrics.
