Lok Sabha polls: Workshop in city today

An open-house workshop on ‘India’s General Elections – 2014′ will be held in Dhaka city on Monday ahead of the 16th Lok Sabha (parliament) polls in India. Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre will host the workshop for media persons, specialists in public affairs, policymakers, academicians, political observers and students which will be held at CIRDAP auditorium near High Court crossing in the city, according to a media release of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. Advocate Sultana Kamal, executive director of rights body Ain O Salish Kendra, will preside over the workshop while general secretary of BROTEE Sharmeen Murshed make the opening remarks. At the workshop, former Indian Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr SY Quraishi will highlight how numerous parts of the gigantic election machinery are mobilised to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election. As a former CEC, Dr Quraishi has experience of how the Indian elections are held and how the office of the Election Commission has evolved to meet the challenges of the world’s largest exercise of universal suffrage, according to UNB.
