Long yard bean fetches good profit in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Mar 09: The growers of early cultivated long yard bean (barbati) in the district are expecting a good yield of their produce during the current season due to a congenial weather condition.
Sources said that harvesting of the vegetable has already begun across the region and the growers have been earning a good profit from selling their produce in markets since very beginning of the season.
Long yard bean is being cultivated abundantly at Annadanagor, Chhawla, Deuti and Nabdiganj of Pirgachha upazila; Paschim Mandrain, Changmari under Gangachara upazila; Pairaband, Boiragiganj, Ranipukur under Mithapukur upazila; Baniapara and Alampur of Taraganj upazila; and Keshobpur and Palichara of Sadar upazila.
According to sources long bean growers under the district have been getting an excellent output of their produce for the last several years, as a result its cultivation is on the increase across the region.
Due to good profit peasants are showing interest in the cultivation of different early vegetables including long bean than cultivation of some other crops, sources said.
Ariful, a farmer at Palichara village under Rangpur Sadar upazila told this correspondent that he cultivated long yard bean on 35 decimals of land during this season. He has already begun harvesting of the vegetable and is delighted due to its higher market price.
Presently, per maund of long bean is sold at Tk 2,200 to Tk 2,300 in markets, he added.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur sources said the peasants under the district have been earning good profit through farming different varieties of vegetables including long yard bean in recent years.
Satisfactory prices as well as high demand have encouraged the growers to cultivate the vegetable on a large scale, sources further said.
DAE is also giving the growers necessary advices in this regard so that they can get expected yield of their produces. Use of modern technologies also enhanced its yield in recent years, sources added.
