Low-cost laptops to hit market in June

Low-cost laptops manufactured by a government agency will hit the market in June, which will help speed up the country's digitisation process, post and telecommunication minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju said Saturday. The cost of per laptop has been fixed at Tk 15,000. The minister also said internet would also be available for the rural people soon as part of efforts to expand technology. The minister's pledges came at a seminar on 'Roadmap to Digital Bangladesh: Role of ICT Education', held at Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST). The government will call international tender by May to set up its own satellite, he told the audience. Mr Raju said the government is going to set up second submarine cable and terrestrial to provide uninterrupted services of information and communication technology (ICT). Chief of Army Staff General Mohammad Abdul Mubeen who was the special guest described the importance of ICT education. Three keynote papers were presented in the seminar. National Project Director of Access to Information (A2I) Md Nazrul Islam Khan presented a keynote paper on the present perspective of digital Bangladesh while a professor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Dr M Kaykobad presented keynote paper on role of ICT education and DU Prof Dr M Lutfar Rahman presented keynote paper on Web security attacks. Major General Mohd Habibur Rahman Khan, Commandant, MIST, presided over the seminar.
