Low-lying areas in Ctg inundated

CHITTAGONG, July 31: Incessant rain for two days coupled with hill water and high tide has caused the swell of rivers in Chittagong, flooding most parts of different upazilas.
Low-lying areas in 13 upazilas of the district have been inundated due to rain and water from hilly area, leaving hundreds of people marooned. Scores of houses have gone under water while crops and shrimp cultures have been damaged.
Internal road communications have been cut off in different places as the roads have gone under water, Anwara upazila administration sources said.
The Met Office has recorded 100mm rainfall in last 24 hours from 6:00 am on Thursday to 6:00 am on Friday and 964mm rainfall in last seven days in Chittagong.
The upazila administrations at Satkania and Banshkhali have supplied dry food to the people who took refuge in cyclone shelters, sources said.
Most of the 17 unions and one municipality in Satkania have been inundated with water from the Shankha and Dalu Rivers. Both the rivers were flowing above the danger level.
At least 50 houses have gone under water. The most affected villages in the upazila are Amilaish, Dhemsa, West Dhemsa, Sonakania, Sadaha, Keochia, Bajalia, Dharmapur, Kaliaish, Nalua, Khagoria and Charati.
In Banskhali, Chanua, Chambol, Shekherkhil, Gandamara, Puichari, Baharchara, Khan Khanabad, Gunagarh, Kathoria and Boilchari unions have been severely affected.
Internal road communications in Chandanaish upazila has remained snapped since Friday morning. Nine unions and the municipality area have gone under water. Several hundred people from dozens of houses have been evacuated to nearly schools.
The worst affected areas are Barkol, Satbaria, Boiltali, Joara, Barama, Hashimpur, Kanchanagar, Dohazari and Dhopachari.
Other upazilas affected by hill water and high tide are Hathazari, Fatikchari, Boalkhali, Raozan, Rangunia, Mirsarai, Sitakunda, Patiya, Lohagara and Anwara.
