Low over north-west Bay intensifies into depression

Wednesday, 17 September 2008

The well-marked low over the north-west Bay and adjoining areas moved west-north-westwards, intensified into a monsoon depression, and now lies over the north-west Bay and adjoining areas off Orissa coast of India, reports UNB.
It was centred about 590-km west-south-west of Chittagong Port, 570-km west-south-west of Cox's Bazar Port, and 390-km south-west of Mongla Port at about 6am Tuesday.
"It is likely to intensify further and move in a north-westerly direction and may cross Orissa coast near Paradwip by Tuesday evening or night, " said a bulletin of Met Office.
Under its influence squally weather may continue to affect the maritime ports and adjoining coastal region of Bangladesh. Maximum sustained wind speed within 44-km of the depression centre is about 40kph, rising to 50kph in gusts/squalls. Sea will remain moderate, the bulletin said.
Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Mongla have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number three. All fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay have been advised to take shelter immediately and remain in shelter until further notice.
Meanwhile, over 100 fishermen were reported missing as 25 trawlers capsized in the Bay off different coastal areas Monday night as the sea turned rough due to a depression.
