FE Report
Eyeing the ensuing World Cup Football, sub-standard television produced in a method called 'refurbishing' is flooding local market cheating the customers with the counterfeit product, market sources said.
'Refurbishing' is a process of making television from parts and components collected from outdated television sets.
Unscrupulous local traders are importing the refurbished televisions in bulk volume to make quick money during World Cup. Refurbishing companies in foreign countries buy old television, collect usable parts and repair or replace key components like picture tube, flyback, tuner to make a new television.
To make the counterfeit television look like a brand new, the companies also paint cabinet and paste new sticker. Main component of a television - picture tube - go through a process called 'renecking' which involves changing the neck of the picture tube to make it new. Longevity of renecked picture tube is short and television sets having such picture tube can go out of order at any moment after purchase.
With all the refurbished work, the television sets look like brand new and it is very difficult to distinguish them from original one. The sets with striking outlook come in market as inferior brand name with price as low as half of renowned brand in market.
The market of refurbished television is growing in the country as low price allure the customers. The marketers also do not provide after sale service. The customers realize their mistake very shortly. With the growing demand in lower income countries, the companies are setting up fully-fledged factories in some countries putting customers right at jeopardy and posing a threat to stability of electronics market in the country.

In this situation, a high official of an electronics company said public awareness is required regarding 'refurbished' television. The buyers should verify the genuineness of the product before purchasing. The buyers should acquire detailed information about country of origin and after sales service. The buyers can avoid risk of counterfeited products by purchasing television of world class brands packed with after sales service. He further said as public awareness about 'refurbished' television increases, buyers now-a-days are inclining to go for branded television of repute ignoring temptation of low-priced counterfeit television.
