Lower rates should benefit internet users

Friday, 20 June 2008

The government deserves appreciation for the decision to reduce the bandwidth charge of submarine cable network. Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) recently decided to lower the charge to minimise the cost of Internet use. So it is expected that internet users would increase across the country. The information superhighway would benefit more people.

It is learnt that both government and the non-government schools, colleges, universities and madrasas, run under Monthly Payment Order (MPO) programme, would be entitled to get bandwidth connection at a 75 per cent lower rate. The government, semi-government, autonomous bodies and call centres would be entitled to get it at 20-60 per cent lower rate.

Apart from this, bandwidth connection upto 64kbps has been made free for the government primary schools.

The world today cannot think to proceed without internet, as it connects people from one corner to another and provides different kinds of service and information according to the need of the users. At reduced rates, many more people of our country can avail this amazing innovation for the benefit of themselves as well as the nation.

The government now needs to ensure that the Internet services providers would charge at lower rates to ensure that the benefit reaches the common users. Besides, there is need to create awareness among the people, in urban as well as rural areas so that they escape exploitation.
