LUMS energy report sheds light on inefficient practices

Monday, 25 December 2023

LAHORE, Dec 24 (Express Tribune): In a significant development, the Lahore University of Management Sciences' (LUMS) Energy Institute (LEI) has released a pioneering report titled "Sustainable Architecture: Advancing Energy Efficient Buildings." The report, presented at a ceremony attended by policymakers, regulatory bodies, and key stakeholders, addresses Pakistan's pressing energy challenges and proposes innovative solutions for the construction sector.
Dr Fiaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Director of LUMS Energy Institute, underscored the urgency of adopting energy-efficient practices, stating, "Pakistan's staggering expenditure of nearly $100 billion on power plants, primarily for summer cooling loads, is unsustainable. By embracing energy-efficient practices, we can slash cooling loads by at least 50 per cent, resulting in significant cost savings."
Read Energy imports drop 13 per cent to $1.42 billion in Nov.
The report sheds light on the seasonal variation in electricity usage, particularly the spike in cooling loads during scorching summer months, necessitating an additional 18,000 MW of power plant capacity.
