Maddhyapara mine-workers go on strike

DINAJPUR, Nov 27 (UNB): The workers of Maddhyapara Granite Mining Company Ltd (MGMCL) at Parbotipur enforced a wild-cat strike for an indefinite period from the morning hours today (Saturday), protesting the termination of five workers and demanding withdrawal of the case filed against them by the authorities.
A total of 289 workers of the MGMCL were agitating on the premises of the mining project at about 9am for realizing their seven-point demand including reinstatement of the 'discharged' workers and withdrawal of the case against them.
Sources said, Mominul Islam, president of the MGMCL Miners and Workers Union, vice president Sadequl Islam, general secretary Mostafizur Rahman, organizing secretary Mehdi Hasan and worker Shahidul Islam were terminated on November 25 on charge of violating the terms and conditions of their services.
Later, Md Abul Bashar, general manager (Administration) of the MGMCL, filed a case against 10 people under Speedy Trial Act with Parbatipur thana on November 25.
