MAGURA, Apr 03: The district has recently experienced a success in producing isabgol.
Magura regional Spice Research Centre sources said isabgol was cultivated on the compound of the centre. Its harvest was completed a few days ago.
The seeds were sprinkled in November last.
Officials at the research centre said the crop is a short-duration one. It can be harvested within 110 days of cultivation.
Around 1,000 to 1,200 kg of isabgol can be grown in a hectare of land.
USAID official agriculturist Khairul Abrar said isabgol cultivation should be popularised among the growers so that they can earn good profit.
It is more profitable than paddy. Moreover, it less vulnerable to virus and insect attack, he added.
Magura regional spice research centre official Dr Moniruzzaman said "outstanding success" has been achieved in growing isabgol in the district.
"Country's total isabgol demand is around 0.2 million to 0.25 million tonnes per year. If the farming can be expanded we can save around Tk 15 billion spent on import a year", the official added.
