Magura farmers fear losses on Aus for waterlogging

MAGURA, Aug 26: Aus growers in Magura are apprehending a loss of Tk 500 million due to waterlogging.
Cultivation of Aus paddy in the district is very close to completion. But due to heavy rainfall Aus lands in the district are facing waterlogging.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Magura said, a total of 9,500 hectares of land was brought under Aus cultivation in the district with an output target of 21,600 metric tonnes of rice. Due to heavy rainfall in the district for 15 days about 1200 hectares of land in the district is facing waterlogging. Aus land in 40 villages in the district have gone under water. Among them 16 villages are Gopalnagar, Izani, Raipur and Bholanathpur under Mohammadpur Upazila while 8 villages including Amuria, Kuchiamora, Beroil and Batajore under Magura Sadar Upazila and 10 villages including Pulum, Gangapur, Bunagati and Baulia under Shailkha Upazila and 6 villages including Kolundi, Moheshpur, Goeshpur and Tikerbilay of Sreepur Upazila are water logged at present.
Unless the weather improves the farmers in the district will incur a loss of at least Tk 500 million.
Magura DAE deputy director Mokhlesur Rahman said, "Rainy season is nearly over. As the weather is improving day by day. Farmers need not worry."
