Magura vegetable growers about to sustain a loss of Tk 100m for blockade

MAGURA, Jan 24: Magura vegetable growers are about to count a loss of Tk 100 million due to blockade.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Magura informed a total of 3870 hectares of land has been brought under vegetables cultivation in the district this year with an output target of 100050 mt.
A bumper production of vegetables has been achieved in the district this year. Earlier growers were overjoyed with the production. But the ongoing blockade has shaterred their dream .During a visit to village Ramnagar, Kalinagar, Nanduali and Belnagar of Magura vegetables were seen to be damaged in the field for want of customers.
Farmers sources informed, brinjal is being sold in the wholesale market at Tk 5 per kg while cauliflower is being sold at Tk 5 per kg, carrot at Tk 2 per kg and papaya at Tk 2 per kg. This price does not even cover the transport cost of the farmers. For this they are not harvesting their vegetables. Under the situation vegetables are getting damaged in the field.
When contacted, Abu Reza a vegetable grower of village Akshi under Magura sadar upazila said, I cultivated brinjjal in 4 bigha of land and expected Tk 2 lakhs as profit. But due to blockade my dream has been shattered. I invested Tk 30 thousand for brinjal cultivation. But in this situation I shall get back no more than 5 thousand Taka.
