Mahila Parishad demands 'women quota' in govt jobs

FE REPORT | Monday, 22 July 2024

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) Sunday demanded inclusion of 'women quota' in the government jobs to bring equality between men and women.
Earlier in the day, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in a verdict slashed quotas in the government recruitment to 7.0 per cent while merits get the most at 93 per cent.
BMP urged the government to resolve the quota issue logically, upholding the basic principle of the Liberation War which calls for equality between men and women, says a statement.
Explaining the court verdict on a recast of the quota system, Law Minister Anisul Haque told journalists on Sunday, "There's now no women quota, nor district quota."
A majority of women are still lagging behind men, BMP said adding that ensuring gender equality in the country will help achieve SDG goal-5.
