Mahmud further docked by Appellate Division

Tuesday, 12 October 2010

Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of the Bangla daily Amar Desh already serving a 6-month prison term for contempt of court was Monday fined a further Tk 100, in default, to suffer one day in prison for contempt of court, having published a signed commentary on the highest judiciary, reports UNB.
Taking a lenient view of the matter, a 3-member Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court (SC), headed by Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque, passed the order.
In the order, the SC observed that the impugned article titled "Swadhin bicharer name tamasa" (Farce in the name of independent judiciary) on May 10, 2010 was published in order to scandalise the highest judiciary.
The SC, however, exonerated Amar Desh's disputed publisher Hasmat Ali, as he prayed for unequivocal apology.
Two lawyers -Mainul Hassan and Reazuddin Reza-filed the contempt petitions separately.
Barrister Abdur Razzaq appeared for Mahmudur Rahman, while Additional Attorney General MK Rahman stood for the petitioners.
