
Maiden convocation of Metropolitan University

Metropolitan University is working to build up educated, technologically efficient and highly productive class citizens who can lead glorious career, enjoy enriched lives and contribute to all people mainly of the country. Sustainable advancement, professionalism, cultural consciousness, strengthening research works and ensuring all out participation of students and professionals and enhanced global academic standards are prime goals of this university. The Metropolitan University started its journey on 3rd march 2003. Dr. Toufique Rahman Chowdhury, a promising educationist and an entrepreneur, made the foundation to set up a modernized private university in the division of Sylhet which could act as model institution strengthening the facilities of higher education in local community and enlarge the social consciousness and revive the past glorious heritage of education of greater Sylhet regions.
Recently this university celebrated its first convocation on 22 April, 2010 at auditorium of Jalalabad Gas, Uposhor Link Road, Sylhet. On behalf of chancellor and honourable president Md. Zillur Rahman, the minister of education Nurul Islam Nahid was present as chief guest in this convocation ceremony. Professor Nazrul Islam, chairman of University Grant Commission of Bangladesh, Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, mayor of Sylhet City Corporation, Dr Toufique Rahman Chowdhury, chairman, Board of Governors of Metropolitan University and professor Md Abdul Aziz, vice chancellor of Metropolitan University were present. Professor Md. Farashuddin, former governor of Bangladesh Bank and visiting professor of IBA and East West University was the convocation speaker. Muhammad Fazlur Rabb Tanvir, deputy register of Metropolitan University was anchor of the convocation ceremony. About 482 students received graduate and post graduate degree.
Currently four schools are running in this university: School of Business, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Law and School of Science and Technology. The classrooms are wide and spacious with audio- video facilitates, air conditioned and scientifically designed with modern acoustics. One of the unique qualities of the university is to maintain limited students in a class. It has a library to provide necessary and adequate service to the faculty and students. It has different computer labs, Internet labs and electronic labs.
This university has published journals and periodicals. Published annually, the journal primarily covers the areas and disciplines taught at the university and hope to move beyond the future. The two issues so far produced carried contribution from scholars like professor Syed Manzoorrul Islam, professor Kaiser Haq and other renowned scholars. It publishes a quarterly newsletter that covers all news and reports of related information and programme. Centre for Research and Publication conducts studies and research on various aspects and issues of business and development issues. It has organised many national and international seminars. Literary and cultural club, Sports club, Business club, ICT society, English club, Health club and Law Students Association are different organisations of this university which are working to build cultural consciousness and social responsibility of the young students of this university.
