Maintenance of roads

Friday, 18 March 2011

A former minister and a prominent ruling party lawmaker was reported to have said that the government 'has failed to carry out any effective repair, maintenance and development works on roads during the last two years'. The veteran lawmaker's view was supported by many members of parliament belonging to the ruling party and was, thus, widely appreciated. Indeed, proper road conditions are considered to be vital for the economy's growth and development. Roads are at the heart of marketing or distribution activities in any economy. Transportation costs of goods are very important in determining the competitiveness of different economic enterprises. How viable these would be depends on their saving transportation costs, time and money. While this factor calls for maintaining a large network of roads, only the width will not deliver, if part of the roads are found to be not so usable due to insufficient maintenance.
