Mainul can't avoid responsibility for exonerating war criminals: Suranjit

Tuesday, 13 November 2007

Adviser for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Mainul Hosein cannot avoid the responsibility for exonerating the war criminals from punishment as he was among the lawmakers who voted for the 1973 constitutional amendment absolving them.
Awami League (AL) presidium member Suranjit Sengupta said this while talking to journalists at his Zigatola residence in the city Monday, reports UNB.
The AL presidium member gave this reaction to the law adviser's scathing comment about the trial of war criminals amid a current outcry for trying them. The AL is a major party to this plea.
Mainul Sunday said that the question should be raised whether those who had been in power but not taken any initiative for the trial of war criminals during the last 36 years should be punished on that ground.
Suranjit said Mainul Hosein could not avoid the responsibility in this connection with the issue because he was 'part of the government in 1972'.
"National consensus has been created against the war criminals and this time one adviser swept it aside as old garbage…If any adviser other than Mainul Hosein had said this, I would have no objection", the former lawmaker said.
He observed that when the first amendment of the Constitution took place in 1973, Mainul Hosein was Member of Parliament. "So, he also should be responsible for not trying the war criminals."
He said democracy would be strengthened when the independence of the country would be protected and observed that trial of the war criminals would save the independence -- and it was the only way to strengthen democracy in the country.
"Why the suspected war criminals would not be arrested when the suspected corrupt persons are being arrested?" Sengupta posed a question.
Referring to the comment of the law adviser of the CG about changing the mindset of the politicians and bringing reform to the political parties, he said creating congenial political atmosphere was essential for political reforms.
"Political parties will bring inner-party reform at a suitable time", the AL leader said, adding that the government had to bring reform in government and political parties should bring party reform in political parties.
He demanded of the CG to create a fair political atmosphere for inner-party reform.
