NILPHAMARI, May 23: Shoals and dried up river beds are used as main maize producing areas in Nilphamari district. Particularly in the shoals of the rivers in Dimla and Jaldhaka Upazilas of the district green maize is grown profusely. Farmers are also cultivating maize in the dried up river beds. The production of maize in one bigha (30 decimal) of land is 25 to 30 maunds and price per maund is nearly Tk. 700 which makes the farmers economically solvent. As the sandy lands of the shoals are very suitable for maize cultivation some NGOs and DAE are providing loan and necessary technical support to the farmers and also encouraging the people to cultivate the granular crop. Sources said maize is generally cultivated twice a year and the winter seasons maize of this year is to be harvested within a month.
