Major outage hits downtown Dhaka
FE Report | Wednesday, 1 April 2015
A transmission line failure following glitch in a major power plant on Tuesday evening led to severe electricity outages in different areas of the capital.
The tripping of Haripur power plant caused the failure of electricity transmission through Maniknagar substation, a senior official of the state-owned Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) told the FE.
Different city areas, especially bustling business-district Motijheel, Purana Paltan, Gulistan, Bijoynagar and Karwan Bazar, were hit
hard by a blackout for an hour and subsequent on-again, off-gain power supply.
An undergoing football match of the Asian Football Confederation under-23 stage halted due to the electricity outage for 27 minutes as the floodlights of the Bangabandhu National Stadium went out for the supply disruption.
Backup power systems like instant power supply (IPS) and uninterrupted power system (UPS) also started failing to provide electricity in absence of sufficient grid supply, reports from various areas said.
"Electricity supply resumed after around one hour," said the BPDB official.
