Speakers at a seminar on Tuesday urged the government to make the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) as a constitutional organisation in order to reap maximum benefit in combating corruption.
They alleged that the administration has become completely politicised and everything is happening there through the reference of ministers, members of parliament (MPs) or political leaders.
"The ACC has been created by a law. To derive better benefit it should be transformed as a constitutional organisation since the constitutional agencies have unique, independent strength," said former chief election commissioner Abu Hena.
The ACC organised the seminar as part of observation of the 'Corruption Resistance Week' at the Commission headquarters in the city.
ACC Chairman M Badiuzzaman presided over the seminar while journalist Monzurul Ahsan Bulbul moderated it.
Mr Hena also said the political parties have big role to bring down the corruption.
Former education minister and BNP leader M Osman Faruk said the high-ups of the society are responsible for corruption.
"The poor people do not have any connection with graft," he said.
Blaming the government for making the administration completely politicised, Former advisor to the caretaker government M Hafizuddin Khan said: "The sign is very ominous to make the society corruption free."
Barrister Amirul Islam said justice is totally absent in the society and the strength of ACC also very limited.
Former president of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) AK Azad said political will is the key to combat corruption.
"Nothing will happen beyond the willingness of the politicians," he said.
Chairman of Public Service Commission (PSC) Ekram Ahmed, general secretary of Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan) Dr Badiul Alam Majumder, President of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Mujahidul Islam Selim, theatre personalities Ramendu Majumder, Mamunor Rashid, ACC commissioners M Sahabuddin Chuppu, Dr Nasir Uddin Ahmed, secretary M Foyzur Rahman Chowdhury were present at the seminar, among others.
The ACC observed the 'Corruption Resistance Week' from March 26 to April 1 for the fourth time to involve all with the movement against corruption.
The week-long campaign was designed with various programmes to create awareness among the people, especially the young generation, to curb corruption for the overall development of the country.
