Make bus lessees accountable

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader directed the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) Thursday to make its bus leaseholders accountable by punishing or awarding according to their deeds.
"Punish those who are engaged in derogating the BRTC's image through corruption, illegal work, harassment of passengers and realisation of extra fare from them but reward those who are working with sincerity and honesty," he said while addressing the BRTC officials at the corporation's conference room on the day.
The minister said corruption to some extent is disrupting the BRTC's service which is to be uprooted with stern action for turning it into a public service centre.
He said the BRTC's fleet has been increased from bus to truck level but its benefit is being eaten up for corruption.
At present the BRTC has 1,546 buses and 138 trucks apart from 17 training institutes. The minister said process has been started to procure 100 more double decker buses, 50 articulated buses and 50 non-air-conditioned buses and 500 trucks to meet the increasing demand of those.
BRTC chairman Jasim Uddin Ahmed was present, among other officials.
