Making DU campus learning-friendly

The University of Dhaka is one of the top public universities in Bangladesh. Every year, more than 50 admission seekers compete for each seat at the DU admission test. It is a dream university for most of our HSC (higher secondary certificate) passed students. However, the university's learning environment does not seem to be suitable for the students to pay attention to their class. Students cannot concentrate on their teachers' lecture due to honking on the road. Besides, heavy traffic is often seen on almost every road on the campus. The entire campus is like a marketplace which is full of noise, crowd and chaotic traffic. Even crossing a road on DU campus is nightmarish for the students. Often, students fall victim to road accidents for speeding vehicles. Also, on-campus political programmes are an everyday issue for Dhaka University. The loud slogans coming to classrooms from political rallies and meetings disturb both teachers and students. Use of loudspeakers is going on unabated. Cultural programmes and examinations are run simultaneously. In such a noisy place, how can students concentrate on their exams or their teachers' lecture?
Learning environments play a vital role in a student's life. Research shows that the physical learning environment can positively affect students' level of satisfaction and their general well-being. However, the atmosphere of study on DU campus is very poor. Day by day, it is deteriorating further. From polythene bags to dirt, littering can be seen everywhere on the campus. And no one seems to bother about the university's cleanliness and hygiene. In terms of studies, it is important for a student to have a safe, sound and suitable environment to le4arn and grow. But such an environment is completely missing in Dhaka University. The number of vehicles on the campus should be brought to a tolerable level. Hydraulic horns should be prohibited on the campus. We urge the university administration to look into these issues and make the campus student-friendly and suitable for studies.
