JOYPURHAT, May 06: The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Joypurhat is eyeing a good malta output this season.
Sources said malta cultivation is gaining popularity among the marginal farmers of the district due to good demand and high market price.
A good number of farmers are expecting to harvest the citrus fruit from September next, said sub-assistance agriculture officer Mursalin Selim of Mahmudpur block.
Malta saplings should be planted four feet distance to get the desired production. TSP, MOP, urea, ashes and compost fertilisers are necessary for the plants. More than four tonnes of malta can be produced from a bigha of land and net profit of Tk 0.3 million to Tk 0.5 million can be made.
Each kg of the fruit is being sold at Tk 120 to Tk 130 in the local market.
