Man beaten dead in Gazipur

A group of people, wearing jackets of RAB, have beaten a man to death in Gazipur district, says a witness who is the owner of a restaurant where the incident happened. But the RAB-1 officials have refuted allegation. RAB-1 officials say they saved the man from several unidentified attackers and took him to a Gazipur hospital where doctors declared him dead. The incident happened on Wednesday evening at ‘Ma Biriyani House’ – a restaurant near Mosjid Market in Chandana Intersection. Some witnesses said the man was possibly aged 34 or 35. The owner of ‘Ma Biriyani House’, ‘Zobayer’, said three men entered his restaurant around 5:45pm. “Several men entered the restaurant and started beating the three customers when they were about to leave after finishing their meals. The attackers were in plainclothes but all of them were wearing jackets with RAB inscribed on them. “Two of the victims managed to flee the scene but the third fell on the floor as he was beaten the most. The attackers then kept kicking him.” At one point, one of them called someone over mobile phone and asked him to come to the scene, Zobayer said. “Several more men wearing the black RAB uniform came in a car after a while and then left with the critically injured man.” However, RAB-1 Commander Lt Col ‘Maksud’ denied the allegations, saying a group of RAB officers were patrolling the Chandana Intersection when they saw several men beating a man. “The attackers fled on seeing the RAB personnel approaching. The duty doctor at Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College and Hospital declared the man dead after he was rescued and rushed there,” he said. Speaking to reporters, RAB-1 Deputy Assistant Director Apurba Chakrabarty claimed the deceased man was a mugger, but failed to provide his identity. “He was rescued from the scene upon hearing of his thrashing and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.” The hospital’s Resident Physician Dr Md Abdus Salam said there were wounds on both thighs and left side of the neck of the dead man. “Initially, they did not look like bullet wounds. The actual cause of death will be known after the autopsy,” he added, according to bdnews24.com.
