COMILLA, July 2 (bdnews24.com): A man died in the early hours of Monday while in police custody in Comilla.
The police claimed Munshi Monsur Ali fell ill during questioning while in remand and died after being admitted to hospital.
Monsur's son Joynal Abedin alleges that his father died after being subjected to police torture. He however admits that his father suffered from cardiac disease.
According to local sources, Monsur used to collect illegal tolls on behalf of the police in the Shashongachha area of Comilla but his service was dismissed some months ago.
Officer in charge of Comilla Kotwali Police Station Tapan Chandra Saha said: "The police arrested Monsur Ali in the Shashongachha area on June 27 on charges of toll collection from drug peddlers using the name of the police and intelligence agencies."
He was produced before the court on June 28 and remanded in custody for three days
Duty doctor Joynal Abedin at Comilla's Sadar Hospital said "On admission Monsur Ali was given oxygen. He died at about 2:15 am. He might have died of cardiac arrest".
