Man gets 10 yrs for illegally possessing firearms

A special court in Jhalakati has sentenced a man to 10 years’ imprisonment for possessing illegal firearms. The convict was identified as Mostafizur Rahman, 32, son of Mojibur Rahman Majnu of Asatyakathi village under Nesarabad upazila in Pirojpur district. Judge Abdur Rahim Talukder of Special Tribunal Court-3 handed down the verdict. According to the prosecution, local people of Bikna area in Jhalakati district town caught two robbers – Mostafizur Rahman and Mahidul Islam – while they were committing a robbery in the area at about 1:00 am and handed over them to police on June 21, 2012. Later, police recovered one light gun from Mostafizur’s possession. Two separate cases were filed against them – one for robbery against Mostafizur and Mahidul and another for possessing firearms illegally against Mostafizur. The verdict was pronounced on Monday afternoon, according to UNB.
