Man killed in Noakhali \\\'shootout\\\'

A man was killed in a ‘shootout’ between some miscreants and police at Chatkhil Upazila in Noakhali district on Wednesday. The dead is Khorshed Alam, 42, a resident of Badalkot village of the Upazila. Police claimed that he was a leader of a gang of robbers. Police said being tipped off a team of Chatkhil police conducted a drive at Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj district and arrested Khorshed on Monday. He was wanted in a number of criminal cases, police claimed. Khorshed was taken to Noakhali on Monday night. After interrogation, police along with Khorshed raided Brickfield area beside Palla Road under Chatkhil Upazila to recover ‘illegal firearms’ around 2:00am on Wednesday. ‘Sensing presence of the police, associates of Khorshed opened fire at the law enforcers, prompting the latter to fire back, triggering a shootout and Khorshed was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot,’ Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Chatkhil Police Station claimed, according to a news agency.
