Man killed in Savar \\\'shootout\\\'

A man has been killed in a ‘shootout’ between law enforcers and a gang of miscreants in Savar upazila of Dhaka on Monday morning. A police officer has also been injured by bullet in the shootout. However, the identity of the deceased, aged around 45, could not be ascertained immediately. Police and locals said the shootout occurred at about 2:00am near Palli Biddut office on Dhaka-Aricha highway in the outskirts of Dhaka city after a police patrol team encountered a gang of 10-12 suspected robbers and challenged the gangsters who were equipped with firearms and hand-made bombs. Challenged the ‘miscreants’ exploded at least three bombs and opened fire on the police. The law enforcers retaliated, triggering a shootout in front of Police Town residential area, some 200 yards off the sub station. The man sustained multiple bullet injuries in the shootout. Sub-inspector (SI) Rafiqul Islam of Savar Model Police Station also received bullet wound in the encounter. The injured man was rushed to Savar Upazila Health Complex where duty doctor declared him dead around 2:45am while SI Rafiqul is now undergoing treatment at Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar, according to a news agency.
