Man killed in \\\'shootout\\\'

A man was killed in a gun battle between a gang of robbers and police in Faridpur on Saturday. Police claimed that the deceased Selim Sheikh, 30, was the ringleader of an inter-district robbers’ gang. Police said Selim Sheikh hailed from Madhukhali upazila of the south-western district. Being tipped off that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery in Kanaipur village under Faridpur Sadar upazila a police team conducted a drive in the area around 3:30am. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on police, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate, triggering a ‘shootout’. Selim was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while others managed to flee the scene. A sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station, Saiful Islam, was also injured in the incident. Police recovered one shutter gun, one foreign made pistol and one round of bullet from the spot, according to a news agency.
