Man sued for torturing wife over dowry

A case has been filed against a man for torturing his wife over dowry in Jessore district. Jahanara Khatun, wife of Monirul Islam, has filed the case with the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Abu Ibrahim. The Judge took cognisance of the charge and fixed August 23 for the hearing. According to the complainant, Monirul of Altapol village of Keshobepur upazila, married Jahanara of Mathpara in Jessore town on February 22, 2013. Since then, Monirul demanded Tk0.2 million from Jahanara’s father for constructing his house. After getting Tk0.2m from Jahanara’s family, Monirul again demanded two katha lands in Jessore town from them. As Jahanra and her family members refused to give it, Monirul allegedly beat up Jahanara and drove her away from his house on April 30 this year. Earlier on June 13, Jahanara, also a school teacher of a Government Primary School, filed a case against Monirul with Kotwali Police Station, according to UNB.
