Man to die for murder in Sylhet

A Sylhet court on Wednesday sentenced a man to death and two others to life term imprisonment for killing a businessman in 2010. The condemned convict, Shafiqur Rahman Shafique, 32, son of Hazi Rahmatullah, a resident of Ganaktuli Lane under Hazaribagh Police Station of Dhaka city, was tried in absentia. The lifers are: Sumon alias Mama Sumon, 30, son of late Azmal Hossain and Khokon, 30, son of late Sharif Mia of Lalit Mohon Das Lane in Dhaka. Of them, Khokon is on the run. The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each. According to the prosecution, Atikur Rahman, managing director of Hotel Anurag in Sylhet city and son of Mohammad Khurshed Ali, was killed by the convicts over previous enmity on November 29, 2010. The victim’s father filed a case with Sylhet’s Kotwali Police Station the next day. Police submitted charge-sheet against them on June 18, 2011. Sylhet Metropolitan Session Judge Akbar Hossain Mridha handed down the verdict on Nov 12, 2004, according to a news agency.
