Mandatory energy efficiency at consumer level stressed

FE Report | Wednesday, 26 November 2014

Nobel laureate Jose Roberto Moreira stressed Tuesday on mandatory energy efficiency at consumer level in the country to ensure cost-effective and efficient use of energy.
"There must be compulsory execution of energy efficiency sooner or later to ensure implementation of efficient energy use," he said.
Voluntarily it can go a certain level, but for further push, the compulsory use of energy efficient technology is necessary, he added.
Mr Moreira, who together with the other members of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of the organisation's efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, was making the keynote presentation at a seminar in Bidyut Bhaban in the city.
State-run Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) jointly organised the seminar titled, "Climate change counter measures: An experience from Brazil."
Brazil has enacted energy efficiency law and invested around US$ 55 million per year on an average over the past one decade to ensure efficient use of energy, he said.
Investment for energy efficiency in Bangladesh might be less considering the smaller size of gross domestic product (GDP) compared to Brazil, he said.
He suggested reduction of subsidy amount in energy sector and invest the money thus saved for energy efficient technologies.
"To ensure economic development, Bangladesh has to rely on conventional energy sources but in efficient way," he said.
Green house gas (GHG) emission mitigation efforts are requested by global society and thus the country has to show its contribution to the world through the most important option - energy efficiency and conservation, he added.
Energy efficiency and conservation saves GHG and saves money, where it is used, Mr Moreira added.
SREDA Chairman Tapos Kumar Roy said Bangladesh is at final stage of adopting Energy Efficiency Master Plan.
