CHITTAGONG, May 19: Ward councillor and former acting mayor M Manjur Alam Manju said he will run Chittagong City Corporation election as a mayoral candidate from Chittagong Development Movement (CDM), a non-political forum of the pro-BNP professionals.
He said this in the district election office compound after collecting the nomination paper. Profe-ssor Abul Kashem Chowdhury, advocate Kabir Chowdhury and some other lawyers and teachers of the CDM were present. No leader of the BNP was seen at that time.
"The main opposition BNP has supported me as a mayoral candidate. But I will contest the polls under the banner of CDM," he said.
Since the CCC is a local government body no one can contest the polls directly on any party ticket, he added.
When contacted BNP city committee president Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowd-hury said his committee will formally announce Manju as their party candidate for the mayoral post Thursday.
Meanwhile, returning officer Jesmin Tuli has warned CCC mayoral candidate Manjur Alam asking him not to make any major demonstration before submission of nomination paper.
