CHITTAGONG, June 22: Mayor-elect M Manjur Alam and his predecessor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury have said that they will work together for the development of the port city.
Manju called on Mohiuddin at his city residence this morning as the defeated mayoral candidate welcomed him yesterday and assured Manju of his support.
Both the leaders had a discussion in private for about one hour.
Earlier on Monday night Mohiuddin in a statement to the press congratulated Manjur Alam four days after the polls saying he will extend all support to the elected mayor.
After meeting his former mentor and main rival in the June 17 City Corporation election Manju told the reporters in the lawn of former mayor's residence, "I always honour him like my elder brother. I have spent some time with him. We have family relations too."
When asked to comment on discussion Manju said he sought the advice and cooperation from former Mayor for development of Chittagong. "Mohiuddin will not deprive me of his long experience, I was assured."
Mohiuddin's eldest son barrister Mohibul Hasan Noufel said, "They talked together for long in a very cordial atmosphere."
Later Manju visited the first grave of former president Ziaur Rahman, founder of the BNP along with party leaders including the central vice chairman Abdullah al Noman and vice president of Chittagong city BNP Shamsul Alam.
BNP, the main opposition in parliament, supported Manjur Alam, nominated by citizens forum Chittagong Development Movement in the mayoral election.
