Mannan Bhuiyan freed on bail

Thursday, 31 July 2008

Former BNP secretary general and ex-minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan was released on bail from Dhaka Central Jail Wednesday, as politicians detained in the interim period kept making comeback, report UNB and bdnews24.com.

"BNP leaders and supporters received him as he walked to freedom at about 5:35pm," said a spot report.

Bhuiyan, who was sent to jail after his surrender to Dhaka CMM court on May 18, was granted ad-interim bail by the High Court on July 28.

He was wanted in the GATCO graft case in which immediate-past Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is the principal accused.

Two other senior ministers of Khaleda Zia's past government - Jamaat-e-Islami chief Matiur Rahman Nizami and MK Anwar of BNP - have already been set free on High Court bail in this case.

Arafat Rahman Koko, Khaleda's younger son, was also set free on parole for overseas treatment.

UNB adds: Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan said Wednesday that there was no alternative to unity in the party.

He made the comment at his Gulshan home after he was released from Dhaka Central Jail at 5:35 pm.

Bhuiyan, a former LGRD minister, faces charges of corruption in GATCO case.
